Through the LIFE Lugo+Biodynamic project of the European LIFE programme, the City Council of Lugo (Coordinator of the project), the Provincial Council of Lugo (co-financing entity), the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Technical University of Madrid (associated beneficiaries) are creating a new green lung in the urban area of As Gándaras. This action is directed by the technicians of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Campus Terra). 

A total of 15,000 plants have been established, distributed among 286 chestnut trees in 3.6 ha; 5,315 maple, oak, cherry and ash trees in 4.1 ha; energy crops (9.000 units of poplar and Miscanthus giganteus – a species with a high biomass yield – for the production of solid biofuels in the form of stelae on an area of one hectare); in addition to the conditioning of an Arboretum, with half a thousand native trees and shrubs of 55 different species, representative of native forests of Galicia on 5 hectares.
